Saint Miriam in Brief: A Quick Look!

(📖 To read our full list of current events for this week,  visit Focus in Brief,  by Clicking Here!)

Today we Honor…The Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time!

🙇🏼 Youth Mass is Sunday! Our annual Youth Mass will take place this Sunday, October 23rd at the 9:00am Family Mass.  Each PREP child will have some role in the Mass.  All children, including the PREPlay children will be invited to sing after Communion in front of the altar.  Please plan on arriving by 8:40am so that we can have a brief practice (PREPlay children can arrive at their normal time).  As the children will be part of the mass, their attire should be “dress casual.”

😶 This Year’s Auction Is Going to Be GREAT! Remember to look ahead as our Annual Silent Auction is coming up on Friday, November 18th with an auction preview at 6:00pm and includes a wine and cheese and wonderful homemade desserts, too! This year’s items include vacations to Disney and Arizona, 7 night cruise for two on the Rhine River, condo vacations, timeshares, a trip to Cabo San Lucas, gift baskets, center pieces, gift certificates, so much more! Plan to join us!

🎟Get Your Lottery Tickets In! Don’t forget to turn in your lottery tickets for our new fundraiser that helps our school keep our tuition affordable and offer the finest in quality, private education by partnering with fine folks just like you, as well as give you a chance to win some real money! Tickets are good for the entire months of November and December and for just a $20 ticket you have over 60 chances to win almost $4,000 in total prizes! Ticket stubs need to be returned by October 31st.

👷🏼Construction Set to Begin!  We discovered a flaw in our security protocol for our schools and so we are building a wall! Well, it is actually a reconfiguring of the entry system at our Admin/School Entrance and the creation of a ‘reception area’ that will also include a new way to check in every child and visitor prior to being permitted to go beyond the entry! Please be mindful that construction will begin Friday, October 28th and will be completed that weekend. Use the handicap church entry doors during this time. If you can help – even if only to paint or spackle, please let Alan know today!

🕯🕯🕯🕯Advent Reflections Booklet Available! Believe it or not, it is almost Advent! And, annually, we help prepare you spiritually for the coming of Christ with a popular, easy-to-use annual booklet called Advent & Christmas: Waiting in Joyful Hope! During the especially busy Advent and Christmas seasons, this booklet offers brief, down-to-earth reflections that bring prayer and Scripture into everyday life in a thought-provoking and lasting way. This year’s reflections are by Bishop Robert Morneau and provide deeply insightful reflections on Scripture readings from the daily Mass, and every reader will grow in their understanding of the word of God. This book will help busy people achieve their goal of enriching their personal prayer life during the seasons of Advent and Christmas. Please contact Deacon Pat to secure your copy before they – like Advent – is well past us by Clicking Here!

🔔Quasimodo, Where Are You? Please help us ring our historic church bell at all Masses on Sundays! We toll our bell at 30 min before, 15 before, and at time of start. Maybe you’d like to help learn how to ring our bell? See anyone on staff or email us by Clicking Here!

🎃Our Pumpkin Patch is Open Everyday through the 31st of October! Our annual Pumpkin Patch is open daily from sunrise to sunset! Stop by the campus, pick up a pumpkin, and support our kids! This year’s crop (of students and pumpkins!) is simply grand!

🕸🕷Join us for a Haunted and Historic Tour! Join Union Cemetery of Whitemarsh at Saint Miriam for a classic All Hallow’s Eve flashlight tour that includes an exciting tour of our century grounds and a walk through the pumpkin patch. Experience the enchanting art and landscape of our cemetery grounds after dark, as an experienced tour guide leads you along winding, dimly-lit pathways and behind the graves of historic figures that include: Harvey Longabaugh, the brother of the Sundance Kid; Thomas May Peirce, founder of Peirce College; the Van Billiard Family who perished on the Titanic;  and George Jago, a Civil War soldier as well as many  other Civil and Revolutionary War veterans.  The nighttime walking tours will focus on the cemetery’s rich history, and of course, some of the liveliest spirits buried within our hallowed grounds, after all, Union Cemetery is on the Haunted Places in Pennsylvania list! Tours will last approximately 30-45 minutes, and will be followed by seasonal refreshments aside blazing fire pits near our pumpkin patch.  Two evenings of the All Hallow’s Eve Walking Tour: Haunted History at Union CemeteryFriday, October 28th and Saturday, October 29th. Each night, tours will begin at 7PM. Attendees are advised to wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and to bring a flashlight.

🕯Honoring All Saints’ and All Souls’ 2016! Praying for the living and the dead has always been a part of Catholic tradition and at Saint Miriam we will honor these very important feast days with the lighting of special candles! First, we will offer stunningly beautiful votive lights hanging from a large, simple branch over our Altar tended from our own wooded grounds at the edge of our cemetery. Then, on the evening of All Souls, at 6pm sharp, our cemetery will set aglow with the light of votive candles within beautiful star luminaries! Parishioners and the general public are invited!Purchase a luminary for your own remembrances, and why not consider adding a few extra so we can add a light to a grave of someone in our cemetery that no longer has anyone left to remember them? What an absolutely beautiful way to honor both the living (Saints) and the dead (souls) at Saint Miriam this All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day for 2016! Forms are available after every Mass beginning this Sunday through the end of October!

💒 Join Us Show Your Love for Our Pastor? You can now track our progress toward our goal with the poster in the Bell Tower Lobby! A few weeks ago we asked for your support in building a pastor’s salary fund. Monsignor has worked for us for almost nine years now and has given much to help us remain a vibrant and growing parish. But, with his schedule ever increasing, he has not been able to take on the additional course work at the university he normally teaches at in the fall and spring terms; it simply will not fit into his parish schedule, and so he once again has made a sacrifice and declined the offer to teach this fall. This leaves him in a terribly tight financial position and quite honestly…is our problem to deal with now!  Monsignor has come to us and requested a salary of $25,000 (Yes, he asked for only $25,000 for all he does and the very long hours he works). Will you help us to afford this needed option by giving a weekly or monthly donation ear marked just for him? Please prayerfully consider our request and see Alan today, or just complete the special insert this Sunday and return it to us today….if you are willing to put our pastor first this fall.  Email us to support today.
