Focus in Brief: Our Weekly Announcements for June 5th 2016!

⏰ Let Us Put Everyone Back On Schedule!

Saint Miriam made a few changes to our schedule. One is temporary and one is permanent. The temporary one is for Thursday Masses at 6:00pm because from June – August we will only hold Masses when a priest is available to allow them some time to enjoy the summer. In September, the regular 6:00pm every Thursday will resume! However, Rosary will still be honored every week at 6:30pm on Thursdays with no interruption. The Sunday Late Mass at 4:00pm will end on Sunday, June 26th 2016. This is a permanent schedule change due to lack of enough participation.

🐾 Welcome to the Family…St. Francis Joliet!

Saint Miriam is proud to be a warm Franciscan Catholic community of faith and also the home of three beautiful statues of St. Francis of Assisi! Now, coming in August, we will be home to the latest creation of Artist Timothy Schmalz who carved the beautiful Jesus at our entry door! Be part of something really wonderful! Join us next week and discover St. Francis Joliet!

🌞 Annual Blessing of Seersucker is on June 12th!

Many may be familiar with the tradition of the “Kirking of the Tartans” held in many Presbyterian and Episcopal Churches. “Kirk” is the old Scottish Gaelic word for church, and so the Kirking of the Tartans is a blessing of the fabric and colors that so much represent various clans, families, and cultures. But we don’t wear much tartan, especially not during the summer! Seersucker, on the other hand, sometimes seems like the unofficial fabric of our clan and tribe—especially as we struggle through the summer humidity!  This year, after the  11:00am Morning Mass on Sunday, June 12th, Saint Miriam is offering its annual Blessing of the Seersucker so  be sure to wear an item of seersucker (or other spring clothing) and join in the fun and be warned…Monsignor will be clad in his finest seersucker suit! A festive outdoor reception will follow!

💔 Help us Save a Life?

As our parish grows, so do the needs to care for one another and be prepared. We have invested heavily this past year in upgrades and security, but one area we need to address is those with heart issues. Monsignor has asked that we install a AED device (Automated External Defibrillator), a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock can stop an irregular heart rhythm and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest is an abrupt loss of heart function. If it’s not treated within minutes, it quickly leads to death. Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. Over 350,000 people will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest this year . It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere and at any age. An AED is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest and is an easy to operate tool for someone with no medical background. If you can help, please see our pastor today. The life saved could be your own.  Help and Learn More Here!

A Prayer for Veterans
(An excerpt from the start of one of the memorial day prayers while stationed on Okinawa, Japan 1999)

“Most eternal God, as Americans, We want to thank you for this great country. We are not proud, but humbled, that in your divine sovereignty we were born or naturalized in such a nation as this.

Thank you for those serving and who have served in the military that protect this country of ours. Thank you for those men and women in our military services who were willing to give their lives and who gave their lives to fight to keep this country free … “

The Secular Franciscan Order, formerly known as the Third Order,  (Latin: Ordo Franciscanus Saecularis, hence one often finds the abbreviation OFS) is a community of Catholic men and women who seek to pattern their lives after Christ in the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi. It was established by St. Francis of Assisi himself early in the thirteenth century. Saint Miriam is a Franciscan Old Catholic Parish and as such patterns its life and ministry after St. Francis. We are Conventual Franciscans (striving to live together in communities such as convents, or a friary.) However, our Secular Franciscans, live with family and perform their jobs out in the world, gathering in community on a regular basis. Join us this Sunday, April 24th at 1:00pm and learn to deepen your faith, assist in the salvation of our sisters and brothers through the work of our hands, feet, and intercessory prayers and community!
